If you intend to use vertical jigging techniques to catch walleye, you will need to select a jig that is heavy enough to go to the bottom, and keep your line vertical. The trick to this technique is to let your drift or troll do all the work for you. You will need to adjust the way the walleye fishing jig bounces off the bottom either with a different weight selection (drifting) or by controlling the speed of your troll. You will need to adjust your line length as the depth changes. If you shallow, reel in line, if you go deep let line out. Make sure your line stays vertical at all times, this is very important if you want to feel a walleye’s bite. Walleyes are very light biters so you need to be able to see the slightest change in your line. The change I am talking about is any slight difference from the routine movement of the line from the jig bouncing off the bottom. Any subtle change give your line a jerk, it may be a walleye.

Probably the best time to use a vertical jigging for walleye technique would be in deeper water situations.I wouldn’t recommend casting for walleye in deeper water if the fish are located on or near the bottom.The reason for this is when you are vertical jigging you can bounce your walleye jig much higher off the bottom and give it more action then casting. Subtle little difference such as more action from the jig bounce off the bottom can be the difference of you catching fish or not.

Probably the key reason vertical jigging in deep water works so well is “the feel” of the walleye hit. When your line is vertical it is much easier to feel a walleye strike.The reason is you are using less line and line stretch does not slight-en the feel of a walleye strike.

Vertical jigging for walleye is very effective when fishing in rivers or lakes. when you are fishing in a lake the wind and your boat will do all the work for you. Just make sure you line remains vertical while you are jigging, and drifting or trolling over hidden structure. In a river, let your boat drift with the current,slowing your drift enough to keep your line vertical while your walleye fishing jig bounces off the bottom.
